Can't Beat The Fleet by Kingoji Can't Beat The Fleet by Kingoji
Acryllics and watercolours, from my sketchbook. Pretty old by now.

A tribute to the early 80's Japanese show X-Bomber, known as Star Fleet in the west. It was a puppet show along the lines of Gerry Anderson's work only it was created by Go Nagai (of Devilman fame), so inevitably, by the time the series had finished, only about a quarter of the cast lived.

Brian May loved it, and so should you!

Go Nagai would be impressed (hopefully)

Star Fleet/X-Bomber was a great show. I wish it aired here in America :(

Just saw the clips of the "movie" version on You Tube. I gotta say, it's actually pretty good! I'm used to Godzilla-level SPFX and the voice dubs are on par with the best anime dubs! The story's basic but smart and fun space opera!

I just took a look at the series and being an avid fan of Gerry Anderson's techniques, I loved it! It reminds me of Gerry's "Terrahawks" series, which dosen't surprise me as they were both made in 1983 or around that time....

I think that Star Fleet was actually the inspiration for Gerry Anderson to try the rod method of puppetry...

Very, very nice :) Good to see such a tribute to such a classic show. I rewatched it recently on DVD, and in hindsight its amazing how dark a show it actually is, how many people get bumped off by the final episode!

And I know! They wouldn't get away with it in a kids show these days.

There is a definite similarity... but then, how many mecha has Japan come up with? Some are bound to lightly resemble others now and then.

Thank you very much. I considered doing a bit for U31, but I find myself drawn to other things first. Like maybe Wheeled Warriors or Inhumanoids.

I just watched this about a month or so ago, great job with the characters! You can almost year the feral roar the Dai X would make during its fights.

I think you've inspired me to whip up a bit of X-Bomber fan-art myself. Thanks!

Not a problem. I think I messed up on Barry's arms, but otherwise I'm quite proud.

dude, seriously. I'm gonna have to come out with a whole line of fanart now. This show pwned my childhood.

I've often thought about attempting to pen a feature length screenplay.

A Star Fleet/X Bomber movie will be made. Oh yes. It will be made.

I totally agree. The X-Bomber is the single greatest space-faring craft ever concieved, and it's Moonbase launch sequence needs to be done shot for shot in a theatrical release.
