Break My Fall by Kingoji Break My Fall by Kingoji
This is a piece I did back in January for Graham Thomson's ([link]) wonderful fan-magazine Hubris.
For quite a while Graham had been *very* secretive about this image, as it was going to be a wraparound cover for issue 15 if I remember rightly. He wanted it to be a complete surprise when it plopped onto subscriber's doormats. But then he had a number of problems, his computer even died at one point and took all the work he had done for issue 15 with it, and so decided to push back what was originally going into that issue until later. It will now, hopefully, be the cover to issue 20. And since that issue wont be out until well into 2011, Graham decided we could release the image now rather than to have to keep waiting for so much longer.
This image is representative of a prose story of the same title which will be in the mag, written by Graham himself. As long time TF comic fans will know, in the Marvel comics Ratchet and Megatron had the true rivalry, moreso than even Prime and Megatron. This story is set after the original Marvel run's cancellation, and deals with the aftermath of certain events and develops the rivalry into the Galvatron era. It's all very exciting stuff, if you're into this kind of thing. :)

I'm very proud of this image, and I enjoyed working on it a lot. But it's quite odd that I now find myself looking at it a few months later and realising how much my style has changed.

Ratchet is on his own now against Galvatron.

It's fab - but I am not half self conscious about my art for the story it accompanies now!

Haha, you'll do great, man. Just think of it as a Sullivan cover for an Anderson story back in the day. Both are great.

I've already submitted my art, but will see if I have time to redo it and up my game!

Ah, you shouldn't feel the need to redo your work, man... it makes me feel guilty.

No, I'd rushed off a loose Mignola esque take on TF's and wasn't too happy. I'd pestered G about redoing it before I'd seen your cover, it just sealed the deal!

I know. In IDW's case, it's doesn't seem th brightest move to sideline the introductory character quite so severly.
But when I think of the track record of the original human perspective characters it doesn't really surprise.

Thanks for the fave, mate. :)

Yeah, it's kind of a tossup who got the bummest deal, innit? Ratchet seems only slightly less rubbed out of existence than Jimmy Pink. ;P

Ratchet will always be sort of a poster-bot for TF comics to me though. When TF comics are being awesome, he's usually at the forefront! (Except for G2 anyway...)

I'm honestly kind of bummed we couldn't use him in SL Jazz somehow. :P

I guess it would have felt a bit contrived to stick him in for the sake of it...
Maybe the next pitch should be Spotlight: Ratchet? Or perhaps a four issue mini that reveals that (as part of his job) he had to keep Hunter's corpse, and whilst examining it he discovers that somehow Hunter might not be as dead as assumed. This story, of course would use Jimmy and Verity in some capacity as well...

Very outstanding artwork my favourite especially is Defensor but I'm just glad it's G1.
The writer has a good story for choosing a different plot and both did this well!
The title reminds me of the song Break My Fall by Breaking Benjamin.

Thank you very much. :)
I couldn't tell you if that's the inspiration for the title, to be honest. You'd have to ask the writer.

See this is the kind of thing that I should be aiming to do! A detailed piece yet not cluttered with good use of perspective! Totally excellent dude! And I love the G1 Galvatron... you really are fantastic at capturing the old school G1 vibe.

Thanks, man. I was aiming to do "yesterday's Marvel today", if that makes any sense, because I knew it was set in that continuity. The old character models, with just a little bit more to them.

Haha. Well, in my head I imagined that Galvatron just backhanded him into the forest. Marvel Galvatron was teh ÜBER.
This isn't a comic, by the way. It's a prose story...

Oh yeah, those original issues with Ratchet and Megatron on the Ark were epic, interested to see where this would go after the Marvel run's ending! :D

And lest we forget; Ratchet nixed Megatron's return later on before most of the characters even knew he was back! Of course, the resulting molecular merging could only have further embittered the pair, surely!

Galvatron's reflection in Ratchet's chest really adds a nice touch to the picture - I love the tension you can feel just by Ratchet's stance too. :D Excellent job! <3
